National Poetry Month Kicks Off with Slam Poetry

EvCC hosted a poetry reading Thursday, April 11, with Lauren Zuniga to celebrate women empowerment and National Poetry month.

The session was over an hour long and Zuniga covered a long list of subjects with her poems, including general topics such as love, societal standards, and growing up. She also covered ongoing political issues like abortion and gay marriage.

Ultimately, hers are the types of poems that make everyone think, but also call to action. She delivered them with just the right amount of humor and seriousness, and engaged with the audience like they were old friends catching up over coffee.

Her performance was filled with animated hand gestures, feet stomping, and spontaneous singing.

Zuniga is an internationally touring poet and author of two published poetry collections, called The Nickel Tour and The Smell of Good Mud.

On her website, she describes herself as a performance poet, creating poetry that is theatrical and performance based in delivery. She is a three time national slam poet and was ranked in the top five female poets in the world.

In order to spread the joy of writing, she is also the founder of Oklahoma Young Writers, which is a non-profit organization that provides literary support and opportunities to Oklahoma’s youth, according to the website.

Zuniga was the first of two poets to visit EvCC. Next will be T. Miller on April 16, at noon in the Jackson Center.
