Weekly Sports Roundup, Issue One

Smell that? Smells like hot dogs, peanuts and Cracker Jack. It must mean that baseball is back in the northwest.

The Mariners opened Safeco field Monday with a shutout victory as they topped the Astros 3-0. Yesterday, however, the Astros roughed up Mariners rookie starter Brandon Maurer for six runs in the first, and that's as far as he got.

Maurer got the hook with an out left in the top of the first. The Astros ballooned their lead 13-0 at one point, but the M's put some points on the board thanks to homers by Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez and Michael Morse. The final score was 16-9.

The Mariners try to cap the rubber game today against Houston. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

The Trojans continued their torrent of wins by sweeping a four game meeting with Shoreline last weekend. The Trojans are in first with a 7-1 record, and face Edmonds (5-1) this weekend.

The Trojans softball team played against undefeated Davis College in British Columbia yesterday, and sadly, Davis is still perfect. The Lady Trojans fell 4-5 and 5-11 in both games. EvCC is 3-5 on the year and face Shoreline this Saturday.

The dinger of the week goes to Mariner Jason Bay, who crushed this ball a country mile late in yesterday's game.

Here's a fun tidbit: Myself and staff writer AJ Hansen were at the Mariners game last night, and we watched Raul's home run sail right over our heads. See if you can spot us! (Hint Bottom, right, look for the teal Mariners jersey and Trojans baseball hat!)
