The Writing Center held an open house yesterday to welcome students, staff and teachers to their new location in Gray Wolf 150.

Monday through Friday.
According to EvCC website, the Writing Center provides peer support for student writers on all types of writing projects in any subject and students also use the Writing Center for personal writing, application essays, resumes, and cover letters.

Matthew Kelsey, assistant director of the Writing Center, said that there were a lot of students who didn’t know that the center existed over there in the Rainier building, because it was too far off and students who also knew where the office was couldn't make come because of their schedule.

“Now, the writing center is moving here, you don’t just have to just come here to get help on your essay, but you can also come here to print out your papers, or to use our books and computers.” Kelsey said.

Kelsey added that now in the writing center offers the facilities of laptops, which makes is a more flexible system. Some people are more comfortable to study with laptop. The Writing Center also has an education section that teachers use.

“This location gives us more opportunity to make us available and to see in the way we want to,” Kelsey said. “Today, we have the open house which is more like a celebration and reminder to all EvCC students and staff that we are here.”

In order to fulfill students’ need, Kelsey mentioned that the Writing Center added more hours than they previously had. The Writing Center is open from Monday  and Tuesday  from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday and  Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Many students come here especially between 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. Many people also were dropping by and printing their papers here,” Kelsey said. “Every day, there will be five to six tutors to assist students.”

Bryce Rochon, one of Writing Center tutors, said that the new room is more centered and accessible for students.

“There are lots more students coming here than before, when I have scheduled tutoring, on Wednesday," said Rochon. "Well, some students are coming because they are curious of what’s here. I like the room here. It is different, it's modern and the old building was outdated.”

According to Writing Center Director Ann Harrington, Gray Wolf is the center of all the social communication science classes and the writing center was just too far away from the activity.

“We moved in the beginning of spring quarter and it’s something that we have been working on ever since they built this building,” said Harrington. “We want to be closer to the English classes and to all the Humanities classes.”

Harrington hopes that more people will be aware of where the Writing Center is. They have already seen an increasing amount of students and traffic,

“We are getting more students even in the first two weeks open here, that makes me feel so happy.” Harrington added.
