Another week, another edition of the sports blog, filled with more downs than ups, especially if you're a Sonics fan.
NBA Commissioner David Stern officially shot down the bid to move the Sacramento Kings to Seattle by a vote of 22-8. There will be no basketball in Seattle for the foreseeable future.
Deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Adam Silver said that "We've never wavered in our desire to return to the Seattle market at some point....We fully expect to be back one day."
No Gary Payton jersey being hoisted to the rafters of a brand new arena, Squatch is still unemployed, and no way to possibly wear "retro" Sonics gear without making some sort of hipster statement. (And if you buy that stuff, the money goes to Clay Bennett, the same Clay Bennett that moved the team to Oklahoma City.)
Don't expect a tipoff anytime soon, friends.
Stern said in a news conference that "the big winner here was Sacramento," which is fine, because we are Seattle sports fans; we don't understand what winning is.
On campus, winning is something the Trojans baseball team needs to do this weekend in the Northern Regional Playoff Series being held at Everett Memorial Stadium. Everett takes the field against the Skagit Valley Cardinals Friday at 7 p.m.
In hockey news, the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Redwings, San Jose Sharks, L.A. Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins moved onto their respective next rounds in their individual quests for Lord Stanley's Cup, with the Kings and Penguins winning last night giving them early series leads at 1-0.
The Mariners are still up to their old ways. The bullpen blew a two-run lead and an excellent start by Felix Hernandez in the seventh inning, falling to the dreaded New York Yankees by a score of 4-3 in New York. At least Raul Ibanez hit a home run.
The NBA can choose not to award Seattle with another franchise, but it can't take away my Sega Genesis copy of NBA Jam Tournament Edition If you'll excuse me, I have a date with Payton, Kemp, and 1993. BOOMSHAKALAKA!
